Chagres Division
Experimental Farm in Catemu

In 2003, the Chagres Division opened the Catemu Experimental Farm, a center for technology transfer and sustainability skills for small scale goat herders, farmers and beekeepers in the zone.

In 2005, the “Lomas de Catemu” brand was launched with the formation of the Lomas de Catemu Agricultural Cooperative and the design of the logo for marketing the farm’s products.

That same year the division received the Good Corporate Citizen award for this project from the Chilean American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), in recognition of best practices in corporate social responsibility.

This initiative has a number of different actions, which include:

Supporting small goat herders through a breeding plan that included the importation of 40 Boer male goats from South Africa to enhance the genetic line and boost milk and meat production.
Implementing a technical assistance program to improve the production practices of farmers.
Improving the genetic quality of the bees.
Training and technical assistance to improve beekeeping results.
Providing bee hives to established beekeepers.
