How it operates
|
|
|
| Since realities
and needs vary, the Emerge Programme has two ways to meet its
objectives. 1. MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: COMPREHENSIVE,
LONG-TERM SUPPORT Oriented towards entrepreneurs operating
above the subsistence level and which are currently developing
and confronting the challenge of growing their businesses. For
them, Anglo American has developed a direct-support methodology
that includes four essential aspects:
For entrepreneur training,
Anglo American has formed an alliance with the eClass
Programme offered by the Business School at Universidad
Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI). Through this alliance,
Anglo American provides –through a certificate
based on an interactive education model- ongoing training
and consultancy in managing the entrepreneurs' businesses.
At the end of the programme, entrepreneurs who have
passed all the courses receive a certificate in Business
Development from UAI.
Parallel to this training process, the entrepreneurs
develop a business plan with technical support provided
through the programme. The idea is to plan the business
by outlining objectives, timescales and results. The
business plan is the instrument that enables them to
show that their enterprise is financially viable.
Once the first two phases are concluded, the entrepreneurs
present their business plans to the Executive Committee
of the Emerge Programme, which studies whether to provide
them with finance based on the economic feasibility
of the business and the entrepreneur’s demonstrated
commitment during the training process.
The final phase lasts three years and is a monitoring
phase to provide mentoring for the business implementation.

2. SMALL BUSINESSES: STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH
FONDO ESPERANZA
The objective is to support small businesses in the provinces
where Anglo American operations are located, through a
strategic alliance with Fondo Esperanza, an institution
that grants micro-credit and business education. The agreement
involves working together on an ongoing basis to provide
adequate support to small entrepreneurs in the various
municipalities where the Programme is being implemented.
The working methodology, carried out by Fondo Esperanza,
consists of providing individual micro-credits to entrepreneurs
who have formed community banks.
A community bank is a group of 18 to 25 people who live
in the same area and join together to receive micro-credits.
This methodology promotes organisation and cooperation
between the families as they strive to achieve common
objectives. They work together week by week, gradually
improving their living conditions.
In each community bank, members serve as co-guarantors
in committing to pay back the loan. This means that if
one person doesn’t pay, the others must pay for
them. They do this even though they are each operating
their own businesses independently. Fondo Esperanza, in
effort to be an effective instrument for overcoming poverty,
is also remarkable in that it provides a comprehensive
service for all of its members. This service consists
of complementing the provision of micro-credits with a
business skills education plan –the Entrepreneurship
School- and promoting social networks.
Thus far, 58% of the enterprises retail goods (small general
goods stores, market stands, and street vendors, among
others), 37% are in the production and sales area (including
baked goods, clothing production and handicrafts) and
5% provide services (hair salons and plumbing services,
among others).
