History

Anglo American subscribes to the Good Citizenship Principles and a series of international agreements that promote not only greater business and management transparency, but also actions that directly benefit communities, such as protecting the environment and empowering small and medium-sized businesses. Our objective is therefore to contribute to the economic, social and educational wellbeing of our communities.

Towards this end, the Emerge Programme is an Anglo American initiative which contributes to the economic development and wellbeing of the communities near our operations by supporting small and medium-sized businesses.

HOW DID THE EMERGE PROGRAMME BEGIN?

The Emerge Programme arose out of Anglo American's conviction that the greatest contribution we can make to the people who live in the communities near our operations is by providing them with the tools they need to get ahead. Using these tools, not only they can improve their own quality of life in a sustainable way, but they can also support others by generating new jobs.

This initiative was inspired by the experience of Anglo Zimele, a successful programme to support the development of small and medium-sized companies, which was implemented by Anglo American in South Africa in 1980.

We began to develop the Emerge Programme in 2006. We surveyed businesses in communities located close to our operations and looked at the business support initiatives in Chile. We also compiled studies on this subject in the country.

Currently, the Emerge Programme is operating in Iquique, Antofagasta, Sierra Gorda, Chañaral, Copiapó, Colina, Til Til, Nogales, Catemu, Llay Llay, Panquehue, San Felipe and Lo Barnechea.

Our goal is to support 7,000 entrepreneurs by 2010, contributing to the generation of new jobs, increased family income and a better quality of life in the communities that have welcomed us as neighbours.
