Emissions

The main air emissions produced in mining are CO2, particulate matter, sulfur anhydride and arsenic. Each of our divisions has implemented control and reduction systems for these emissions.

The Chagres Smelter, for example, implemented a 4 station monitoring network to record concentrations of sulfur anhydride and send monthly data.

The smelter also has taken steps to control its arsenic emissions, which are currently lower than the legal standard despite increases in production.

Waste

In 2005 the company updated its Hazardous Waste Management Plan for all of our divisions and presented it to public health authorities. The Plan seeks to encourage recycling and minimize waste generated.

In addition, in the neighboring town of Catemu the Chagres Smelter launched the Forjadores Ambientales (environmental trailblazers) program which rewards self-managed initiatives in the community that protect the environment through recycling.
