Sustainable water use is one of our priorities, because it is a scare resource and because
its sound use reduces production costs. In 2005, the company’s water consumption
decreased by more than 500,000 m3.
The main measures implemented to reduce water consumption were:
• Development of recirculation systems for our processes.
• Investments
in infrastructure to avoid seepage to groundwater
such as the
construction of infiltration curtains.
We also expect reductions in discharges to surface water through a recirculation system
for water from refrigeration at the Chagres Smelter, which is currently under implementation.
This will enable the division to reuse almost all of this resource and reduce discharges,
which currently represent 80% of all company discharge.
