The Chagres Division implemented the program “Forjadores Ambientales de la Comuna de Catemu” (Catemu Municipality Environmental Trailblazers Program), which supports the annual health plan of the local health clinic, provides community education and rewards initiatives that promote environmental improvement and recycling.

In the program’s first stage, implemented in 2005, 68 women were trained with skills and knowledge to enable them to manage waste.

A contest was also organized among all the local schools in Catemu to choose a logo and slogan for the program.

In 2006, participants organized a workshop for home compost production and worm composting to reduce the amount of organic waste produced in the community.
