The DeLTA - UCN Project
(Developing and Leading Academic Talents) is an educational
program implemented by the Mantos Blancos Division in
partnership with the Universidad Católica del Norte, the
Fundación Andes and the municipalities of Antofagasta
and Mejillones.
Under this program, children and youth from local public
schools have access to special courses offered by Universidad
Católica del Norte. These courses seek to stimulate their
intellectual, social and emotional development. Students
choose from a series of curricular options in basic sciences,
engineering and technology, personal and social development
and natural and social sciences.
Beneficiaries can stay in the program until they finish
secondary school and eventually enter a university program
in their area of specialization.
In its first year (2004), 80 students from grade six to
the first year of high school benefited from this program,
and by 2007, when the first generation of DeLTA students
graduated, there were 320 students in the program.
The increase in students since was due to the expansion
of the program in 2006 to students from Baquedano and
Sierra Gorda, and to special courses offered to students
in Calama and Chuquicamata in the summer 2007 session.
